Grime-The Genre that never stops evolving

In the 18 months that I’ve been away the genre has exploded beyond anything I thought possible. Konicchwa was released, there was grime at the Brits, Stormzy announced a football signing and Wiley and Dizzee shared a stage on the same day.

Big Narstie, Lady Leshurr, AJ from the Lane are all played on R1 day time and ModeFM/ NTS/ Radar have established themselves as the places to be heard with shows from Boy Better Know, Spooky (even squeezing in a weekly breakfast show) Argue, Slimzee, and AG has moved from Mode to NTS.

The female presence has grown massively too, there’s more MCs, more DJ’s, more bloggers, more photographers.

Grime has taken over the festivals.  I don’t mean early slots in little tents I mean Skepta on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, I mean JMEs Tropical having tents up and down the country, Stormzy and Big Narstie on the main stage at Detonate plus many many more.

Every week I see MCs and DJs in NewYork, New Zealand, Russia, Croatia, Japan, Berlin, Barcelona, Ibiza, Toronto. Grime is truly international.

The unstoppable Lord Of The Mics team have released clothing, held a live show and collaborated with high end brand phirewire and are looking at their 8th release if they go ahead this year.

The Den has become the place to perform and it’s DJ clashes legendary!

There has been album releases, tours and the quality of the music just keeps getting better.

I think people have finally stopped dismissing Grime and I haven’t heard anyone declare “Grime is dead!” For about three years now, the genre has finally envolved and established itself and its many artists as an unstoppable force that no one can dismiss any longer.

image

ITS BEEN VERY EXCITING WATCHING THE CULMINATION OF THIS PROJECT; TERRY AND MUTE HAVE WORKED WITH THE CREAM OF THE CROP OF GRIME AS WELL AS SOME OF THE NEWEST NAMES AROUND TO PRODUCE OF THE MOST ALL ROUNDED GRIME COMPILATIONS IN A LONG TIME.

“With 34 tracks featuring over 50 MCs spread over 2 CDs, “Authentic” is the new heavyweight compilation from DeadstockGrime. Curated by people that have been around the Grime scene from the beginning, Authentic, as you would expect from the title, contains nothing but the filthiest Grime sounds from a range of artists including veterans such as Nolay, Rage, and Lewi White, and the best of those coming through now, like Ghostly, Snowy, Mez, and many more.

Available soon (pre-order link below), we aimed to drop the grimiest compilation to grace the Grime scene, and with further features from the likes of Jendor, Rival, Jammz, Opium, SNK, and Invasion Alert, we believe Authentic to be just that!”

A.T - Sunshine & Gunshots EP - COMING SOON

The weather might be a flop but one person intent on making Summer last longer is A.T. (Abstract Talent) who drops his new “Sunshine & Gunshots” EP on the 29th of this month on WPF Records. Considering that A.T. also released his last EP, “Henry VIII” not so long ago, I thought I’d ask him a few questions about future releases, making Grime and Drum & Bass, experimenting with tempos, and more. And, being the generous type, A.T’s also given out a track that you can download below.

INTERVIEW: DJ KARNAGE

image

GrimePrincess How did you become part of RollDeep? Have you always been a DJ? How did you get started?
DJ Karnage, I always have been apart of roll deep since it was founded. I started playing jungle when I was 15, and I started on rinse in my last year of school playing jungle with MC Dream. Then Rinse parted ways and went from being jungle and garage to just garage, I then started a show as a garage DJ and then started a show with Flowdan, then Wiley joined us then Breeze, Scratchy, then Dizzee came through but this is before 2001. Wiley decided he wanted to form a crew and as I’ve known everyone from school, you could say I was in Roll Deep cause we all went to school together or just because I was a sick DJ. I got started DJing like most people in East London, in a youth club. rinse started again in 1998 and they were looking for DJS, I’d go to my local youth club in Bow, then my uncle and Geenus got Rinse up again and I got a show playing Drum n Bass and Jungle at like 7-9 on a Saturday. eventually I bought my own decks with my own money and my mums help, and from then on all my money just went on records, I used to go up west on a Saturday at Black Market Records, all my weeks money just used to go on records.

GP, You were a big part of the early Rinse FM, do you think we will ever see a rise in pirate radio like ten years ago again?? What would you say was your biggest set on Rinse?
K, Its hard to say due to the rise of internet radio and stations such as 1xtra and Capital Xtra and the internet and social networking such as you tube Facebook and Twitter, where as years ago there was no social media, only pirate radio to showcase your talents and a buzz would be created from the underground to overground, where as today you can make a beat on your laptop , vocal it, shoot a hood video, upload it to YouTube and make a twitter and Facebook account all in one day if you get what I mean ………… So it’s moved on from just pirate radio now I think.

GP, As a foundation member of the grime scene, how do you feel about Grime now and its perception by the media?
K, The media has always perceived grime scene in the past as a dark troublesome scene, but over the last 5 years I feel they have softened their view and are more encouraging to the urban scene in all types of music and embrace it much more.

GP, You’ve just been to Vienna with Flowdan, its not the most obvious grime venue, what was thecrowd like?? Whats the biggest crowd youve played too?
K, The crowd was great , they know there stuff in Vienna you would b surprised, it was more of a underground type event but crowd were great sing alongs all night……. And biggest crowd mite have been wireless festival , or one festival in hull 90,000 people.

GP, Do you prefer the days of vinyl decks to the modern serato??
K, I prefer vinyl because I’m old skool, I feel CDJ’s are slowly taking the art of DJing away, but the modern serato is good because I love tech, but for the art of DJing it’s got to be vinyl.

GP. Have you ever been bitten by the production bug?
K, hmmmmmm a lil but never followed through with projects which is a shame.

GP, Do you have any projects coming up?
K, Yeah I have with Flowdan and Solo and starting to look into putting on events, with a few other DJ’s, but that’s in the pipe line.   Find DJ Karnage on twitter as @KarnageRolldeep on Insta as @ DJKarnage

LOTM 6: DORRIS INTERVIEW

I CAUGHT UP WITH DORRIS LAST WEEK AFTER HIS CLASH WITH HAZMAN ON LOTM6, HERE’S WHAT HE HAD TO SAY.

WHEN DID YOU FIND OUT YOU WERE GOING TO BE ON LOTM ?
I found out 13 days before the clash. Proper out the blue.

DID THE CLASH BEING LIVE ADD TO YOUR NERVES?
I’m used to clashing on Words Are Weapons, so clashing live on mic was something new to me. Proper 8 mile vibes. And to be honest I didn’t get much chance to think or get nerves. One minute I was having a cig outside the next I’m on stage about to clash. Then another minute later I’m outside smoking a victory spliff. All happend really fast haha.

YOUR OBVIOUSLY USED TO BATTLING ON WAW, DO YOU THINK IT PREPARED YOU FOR ALL THE MADNESS ON SUNDAY?
I’ve clashed on waw previously a few times but this lotm event was different because I did not no what to expect in terms of venue, settings and crowd it was exciting!

IN YOUR OPINION WAS THE CLASH EVENLY MATCHED?
From what i can remember I ate him alive for 2 rounds then he took the third. I’d to watch it back tho I can’t really remember. But yeah it was a good energetic fun clash.

DO YOU NORMALLY SWAP BETWEEN GRIME AND RAP?
I only really put out grime.

WHERE CAN WE HEAR YOUR MUSIC ?
Type Dorris in on YouTube…….I’m doing abit 😉 haha

I HEARD MANY PEOPLE SAY, YOUR CLASH WAS THE MOST ENTERTAINING OF THE DAY, HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?
I semi knew our clash would be full of jokes and witty banter. You had opium v dialect full of flows and content. P money n big h the serious super lyrical clash (well was supposed to haha) and then me n hazman the hungry less know guya just ripping each others faces of. Good balance and well matched clashes tbf.

HOW DID YOU PICK YOUR TUNES FOR THE CLASH?
We just chose on stage at the clash. I’m a proper fussy guy when it comes to beats but I didn’t wanna delay the day so we just cracked on with pretty much the first 3 beats Logan played for us.

WILL YOU BE APPEARING ON DONT FLOP ?
Never been on don’t flop, eurgh has asked me but I don’t think I’ll be making an appearance any time soon tbh.

WHO INSPIRES YOU MUSICALLY?
Nobody proper inspires me musically, it’s more day to day situations and life. But if ever I’m slacking I always think I bet Wiley and ghetto are making tunes right now and I’m just sat here smoking and drinking haha #fixup

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BATTLING?
Had my first proper clash at the beginning of 2013 but obviously been clashing/sending since I first started 8 years ago. My first tune was actually me sending for a bunch of random people who didn’t even mc haha (wtf was i doing ?) So it’s kind if been there from day, always been a murkers!

WOULD YOU HAVE PAID TO ATTEND LOTM YOUR SELF ?
Obviously coming from manchester is a bit peak. But if I lived in or around London I would have 100percent paid 100pound to see that. #grime #history #youhadtobethere !

LOTM6 LIVE: A ROUND UP OF THE DAYS EVENTS

Bn_HTDVCIAIFE-X

WITH MY ALARM RINGING IN MY EARS I WOKE YESTERDAY AT 5AM TO BLARING SUN, A THRILL RAN THROUGH MY BODY AT THE THOUGHTS OF WHAT THE DAY MAY BRING AND BELIEVE ME IT WASN’T TO DISAPPOINT……

I HIT THE ROAD AT 8 AM TO HOPEFULLY HIT DALSTON NICE AND EARLY, THIS PLAN WAS SCEWED SLIGHTLY BY THE ARSENAL PARADE, AFTER A SLIGHT 15 MIN DELAY WE WERE HEADED TOWARDS BIRTHDAYS OUR VENUE FOR THE DAY TO ACTUALLY WATCH LIVE LOTM CLASH’S.

NEVER BEFORE HAVE THE PUBLIC BEEN INVITED INTO WITNESS LOTM CLASH’S, NEVER HAS A CLASH BEEN SO HYPED OR SO ANTICIPATED. THE LOTM PUBLICITY MACHINE HAS BEEN IN FULL FLOW HITTING UP 1 XTRA, RECORDING MINI DOCUMENTARIES AND TONIGHT IT IS CROWNED WITH A LOTM BOILER ROOM.

AS WE ARRIVED THERE WAS A LOT OF BLEARY EYED GUYS AND A FEW GIRLS 🙂 STOOD OUTSIDE BIRTHDAYS LOOKING NERVOUS AND TOO BE HONEST A BIT SHIFTY, LOTS OF LOCAL DALSTON RESIDENTS WERE WITNESSING THE GROWING CROWD I WAS ASKED SEVERAL TIMES ‘WHATS HAPPENING?, IS IT AN AFTER PARTY?’ AS WE HAD ALL BEEN THREATENED WITH BEING LOCKED IN THE TOWER OF LONDON IF WE LEAKED THE DETAILS OF THE CLASHES LOCATION, MOST PEOPLE WERE UNDERSTANDABLY RELUCTANT TO ANSWER PEOPLE OR IF THEY SAID LOTM THEY WERE MET WITH QUIZZICAL LOOKS.

AFTER THE QUEUE BEING MOVED SEVERAL TIMES AND IN THE SWELTERING HEAT PEOPLE WERE GETTING QUIET AND DRINKING LOTS OF NICE COLD BEER FROM THE SHOP, THERE WAS ALOT OF JOKES TOO AND BANTER I SPOKE TO TICKET HOLDERS FROM BRISTOL, KENT, NOTTINGHAM, MANCHESTER AND MANY MORE.

Bn_HZXRIIAAythF

ONE OF THE FIRST FACES I SAW WAS JAMMIN WHO ARRIVED WITH THE LOTM GIRLS FOLLOWED BY BLIZZARD, STORMIN, NASTY JACK AND THE HEAVY TRACKERZ AS WE ENTERED FOLLOWING SWIFT AND STRICT ID CHECKS AND SEVERAL MULTI COLOURED STAMPS LATER WE RECEIVED OUR GOODY BAGS [TEES, CDS KEY RINGS LOTM BANDANA AND  THE LATEST COPY OF RWD] THE ATMOSPHERE HEIGHTENED JAMMER TURNED UP ALL OF A SUDDEN EVERYWHERE YOU LOOKED THERE WAS PRODUCERS AND MC’S

BoAUCqwCUAAykq6

IT WAS A FAB MIX OF OLD AND NEW EVERY CREW WAS THERE THE INVASION CREW TURNED UP [SOX WAS WEARING THE MOST AMAZING OUTFIT I’VE EVER SEEN] TO BE STOOD AMONG THE GREAT AND THE GOOD OF GRIME AS A FAN WAS FANTASTIC EVERY ONE WAS HAPPY AND IT WAS NEARLY TIME FOR THINGS TO START.

AS WE WERE ALL HERDED DOWNSTAIRS FOR MORE SEARCHES AND INTO THE BASEMENT FOR THE DAY  THERE WAS LOTS OF SHAKING OF HANDS AND NODDING OF HEADS AS OPIUM AND DIALECT TOOK THE STAGE FOR THE FIRST CLASH.

JAMMER TOOK TO THE MIC TO ANNOUNCE THE START OF THE CLASHES, THREATEN US ALL WITH DEATH IF WE ATTEMPTED TO FILM AND AFTER CHECKING EVERYONE WAS READY IT ALL KICKED OFF WITH OPIUM OVER A DULLAH BEATZ TUNE. IT WAS A SUPER HARD CLASH OVER 3 ROUNDS AND A BONUS ROUND WITH BOTH GUYS SAYING ALOT!!! YOU COULD TELL BOTH GUYS WERE SEASONED BARRERS, DIALECT BECAUSE OF DON’T FLOP AND OPIUM FROM BEING ABOUT THE LAST FEW YEARS, I WOULD SAY OPIUM’S BARS WERE EASIER TO HEAR AND I’M SURE ONCE THE DVD COMES OUT MAYBE A FEW MINDS WILL BE CHANGED!

THE CROWD BEHAVED IMPECCABLY TO BE HONEST UNTIL THE  MAIN CLASH NO ONE HAD THEIR PHONES OUT, NOR DID THEY SHOUT OVER THE MC’S ETC.

BoAPCpLCAAAlZdT

AS THE FIRST CLASH FINISHED WE SPILLED OUT INTO THE DALSTON SUNSHINE AND MORE AND MORE MCS HAD APPEARED AND EVERYONE WAS GRABBING WELL NEEDED WATER AND CIGARETTE BREAKS BIG H’S MANAGER WAS STARTING TO LOOK NERVOUS AS H HADN’T YET APPEARED AND P MONEY WAS IN THE BUILDING READY.

Congratulations to Dialect on a successful performance! Did Don’t Flop proud! Was a memorable afternoon!”

AS WE ALL HEADED BACK DOWNSTAIRS FOR THE DORRIS V HAZMAN CLASH THERE WAS MORE EXPECTATION AND EXCITEMENT AS THE MC’S MOVED THROUGH THE CROWDS, THE CROWD AGAIN SETTLED DOWN TO WATCH IT ALL GO DOWN. I WAS STOOD WITH CAPO, MAXIMUM, LITTLE DEE AND SPYRO AND TO WATCH THEM AND TO SEE THE CROWD IN FRONT OF ME ENJOYING IT ALL WAS PRICELESS. IT WAS A SUPER HARD CLASH BOTH THE MC’S GIVING IT THEIR ALL, TO BE HONEST THIS WAS A REALLY GOOD ENTERTAINING CLASH AND EVEN IF BEFORE YESTERDAY THE TWO WERE THE LESSEN KNOWN ELEMENT OF THE DAY THEY WONT BE ANY LONGER!! AT ONE POINT I GOT A BIT SQUASHED AND  HAD TO RUN OUTSIDE TO GET MY BREATH BUT ITS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST.

was liiiiiveee. History in the making.”

AS EVERYONE CAME BACK UPSTAIRS FOR THE SECOND BREAK YOU COULD FEEL THE ANTICIPATION BUILDING, AND THEN BIG H TURNED UP!  THERE WAS SUCH A RIPPLE OF EXCITEMENT THROUGH THE CROWD THAT H WAS HERE AND ITS ON! I FEEL A FEW PEOPLE WERE QUITE WORRIED HE WASN’T GOING TO TURN UP. BY THIS TIME  SKEPTA, SHORTY, BLAY, J2K, MANGA, CHRONIK RAGE AND NAMIX HAD TURNED UP AS WELL AS FEW OTHER FACES, I HONESTLY DON’T THINK I’VE EVER SEEN SO MANY FACES IN ONE PLACE APART FROM AT ESKIMO DANCE AND TO BE STOOD IN THE CROWD NEXT TO LETHAL BIZZLE WAS NOT SOMETHING I EXPECTED. ANOTHER SURPRISE OF THE DAY WAS THE AMOUNT OF LADIES IN THE BUILDING  FROM THE LADIES OF LOTM TO THE LIKES OF SIAN ANDERSON AND JULIE ADENUGA, I SAW AT LEAST 10 LADIES IN THE QUEUE WHICH TO BE HONEST IS NOT SOMETHING I EXPECTED.

Was great to see the grime scene out in full force today at the clash Djs Mcs Producers Bloggers everyone”

THERE WAS A CAMERA CREW MILLING ABOUT ASKING PEOPLE THEIR OPINIONS OF THE CLASH, HOW THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD GO ETC, OVERWHELMINGLY THE FAVOUR WAS IN P MONEYS I HEARD LOTS OF ‘HE’S TECHNICALLY BETTER’, ‘HES GOT MORE BARS’, ‘HE’S AN ANIMAL’ WAS ONE ON MY FAVOURITES.

You jus had to be in the building to feel what was going in with wooah looooool ogzzzzzzz”

SO AS WE ENTERED THE LAST CLASH I SWEAR THE AUDIENCE TRIPLED IN SIZE, OR THE VENUE SHRANK! IT’S MY FIRST EXPERIENCE OF ARTISTS BEING AT AN EVENT AND THEY WERE JUST AS HYPED AND EXCITED FOR THE MAIN EVENT AS THE FANS WERE!!

Bn_eQ3yCUAATP2x

THE CROWD WAS ASSEMBLED THE NOISE BUILT AND BUILT! THERE WAS GUYS BANGING THE BAR, THE AIRCON DUCTS, THE AIRCON MACHINES, I’VE NEVER WITNESSED SUCH FEROCIOUS ENERGY AND ANTICIPATION IN SUCH A SMALL VENUE. FORGET GROVES AND FROCH FORGET WWE SUMMER SLAM THIS WAS THE BATTLE! THE CLASH! THE LORD OF THE MICS! THE CROWD WAS READY JAMMER WAS READY PMONEY WAS READY! BIG H, WELL BIG H STARTED READY.

THE FIRST ROUND KICKED OFF AND THERE WAS SOME INCREDIBLE BARS FROM H THE CROWD WAS GOING MAD, NO ONE CARED IF THEY WERE FROM NORTH SOUTH EAST WEST OR THE MOON, JUST THEY WERE THERE AND THE SMACK TALK WAS ENPOINT!

AND THEN , WELL, IT ALL GOT A BIT HEATED…

P Money Vs Big H. I just witnessed the UK equivalent of Canibus pulling out his notepad. I am speechless.

May 18 I was there!!! All I’m saying is looooooool too much joke shout out to

H WANTED LOGAN TO JACK THE RIDDUM, JAMMER AND P BOTH SHOUTED NO RELOADS!!, THE CROWD STARTED TO TURN THE NOISE WAS JUST GETTING LOUDER. THEN CAME LOTS OF HEATED WORDS BACK AND FORTH FOLLOWED BY H SPITTING SING ALONG BARS TO WHICH P MONEY RETURNED BUT DEMANDED A PROPER SECOND ROUND NOT TUNES !! AT THIS POINT IT ALL GOT VERY HYPED FANS AND ARTISTS ALIKE WERE ALL READY TO SEE THE NEXT ROUND. THEY WANTED BLOOD AND THEY WANTED IT NOW!

No footage is gonna represent today. NONE. It’s a be there ting.”
That was a MADTING mad Respect did still enjoy that glad I could be part  “
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT NO ONE COULD PREDICT! AND TO SEE WHAT WENT DOWN YOU’LL HAVE TO GRAB THE DVD WHICH WILL BE OUT FOR RELEASE IN JULY
Bn8p8MuIMAA2KOr
THE DAY ENDED WITH LOTS OF SOCIALISING AND LOTS OF SPECULATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA, MEMES STARTED POPPING UP AND THEN RUDEKID TWEETED THIS TO TOP OFF A SURREAL DAY

Today in dalston i saw this pic of on the wall… So random but sick.”
