I CAUGHT UP WITH ONE OF GRIMES LEGENDARY PRODUCERS DEXPLICIT.
KNOWN AS A TRUE PIONEER OF THE SCENE DEXPLICIT TALKS ALL ABOUT HIS NEW PROJECTS AND WHY GRIME IS IN A BETTER STATE THAN EVER BEFORE !!
HOW ARE YOU?
I’m good I’ve just had lunch.
SO ITS TAKEN ME A WHILE TO GET ROUND TO TALKING TO YOU, I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR DEX FILES PROJECT
Yeah, OK funny enough I’m not calling em the Dex Files anymore, i’m just calling the whole thing ‘Bass Life’
OK, ARE YOU STILL RELEASING AN EP A MONTH WITH IN THAT PROJECT?
Yes, everything is still the same I’m just changing the project title.
SO ARE YOU ON THE THIRD OR FOURTH MONTH NOW?
It started in February and i released Bass Life in February and ‘wave machine’ with Big Narstie came out of that. Which became ‘Feel’ which is on his EP. The Second month we used Frisco and the third one is out now, with the fourth one ready to go. The fourth should have been out at the end of this month but we’ve gone in promoting the Frisco tune.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE LISTEN TO THE DEX FILES ? WHERE CAN WE FIND THEM?
Soundcloud, everything is on my soundcloud here
YOU WERE SAYING PEOPLE VOTE FOR THEIR FAVOURITE, SO HOW DO THEY DO THAT ?
What it is, people vote for their favourite track on the EP or the track they’d like to hear a vocal on, then I go and choose a MC from my list of favourite MCs and I get them to jump on a tune and make a song out of it and we release it on iTunes. they use a # on twitter or by leaving a comment on my soundcloud. Also there is a thread on Grime Forum people can use.
YOU HAVE RECENTLY COLLABORATED WITH BIG NARSTIE ON HIS LATEST PROJECT, THERE IS FOUR OF YOUR TRACKS ON THE PROJECT!
The funny thing is he had already wrapped the project and then he came studio with me , we did a mammoth session and yeah, he decided to use some on the tracks and fling them on.
LOL! I KNOW HE WAS SAYING TO ME THAT ONCE ‘RETRIBUTION’ WAS RECORDED HE KNEW HE HAD TO GET THE TRACKS INCLUDED.
YEAH! Narsties a mad man you know, he always comes studio on a 110. He’s always the way you see him on the interviews 24 hours a day.
WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU GOT PLANNED ONCE THIS PROJECT IS FINISHED? WILL THE RELEASED VOCALS BE COMPILED INTO AN ALBUM?
I’m gonna put a compliation cd out, plus more that will be like a grime LP
IS IT A SOLEY GRIME PROJECT THEN?
It is all grime, but there is a deviation here and there at 158 bpm but to me it still grime, there is a few Dubstep infused tunes aswell. I consider Dubstep a variation of grime anyway so its the same to me.
DO YOU FIND IT HARD AFTER 10 YEARS TO STILL KEEP WITHIN THE GENRES SOUND, I ASK BECAUSE WHAT YOU MAKE NOW IS MILES AWAY FROM THE EARLY SOUND?
What it is, I think as I’ve matured as a producer I’m able to be more technical. So for example now because of what I know it takes me a lot longer, as I use more techniques and I feel its really important to keep it moving, keep trying to stay cutting edge, getting new plug ins, using new sounds. Yes it is harder its a challenge but its a good thing its exciting and the beauty with grime is that its still an experimental genre and that keeps it fun.
DO YOU FIND IT A CONFINING GENRE AT ALL?
In what way do you mean ? In terms of what?
WELL I WATCH TWITTER 24/7 AND WHEN PEOPLE LIKE WILEY ANNOUNCE THEY WANT TO DO OR ARE DOING SOMETHING THE OUTCRY OF DEVIATING FROM THE GENRE IS MASSIVE EVERY TIME, IF YOU WANTED TO DO PRODUCE A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GENRE, DO YOU THINK THAT WOULD BE VIEWED NEGATIVELY?
I think people are worried, that the popular artists will leave. Grime is like that faithful old girlfriend that everyone takes out for dinner then they do the dirty on her [laughs] so when people say I’m gonna do this, so they can progress, people worry the artists will leave and never come back.
DO YOU MAKE OTHER GENRES?
From the beginning I’ve always moved around. I started in hip hop, then garage and then grime. Basically if I like it I make it. My hiphop mates gave me loads of stick for ‘selling out’. Everything helps the scene if you’ve made grime your always gonna be defined by your beginnings in grime. Its all good the scene is evolving because back then there was no millionaires, the ones people complain about not being here anymore come from the culture of grime. back when every 1 was on pirate radio hungry the love is till there its just a scene, the Love is still there the scene has pushed out across the globe and i see grime in its healthiest state ever.
ANYTHING NEW COMING OUT YOU CAN TALK TO US ABOUT?
I have a new single coming out with Durtty Goodz and he’s as grime as you can get. It has Meleka on the hook and we are just trying to do some different its a proper summer tune.
